Foreword 9if we become able to receive calamities as a warning fromnature about humanity’s way of life and thinking, then Ibelieve something will change. I therefore think if we findcauses only outside of ourselves and continually blame thegovernment, the Tokyo Electric Power Company or thenuclear power security officers, we may end up with missingout something important. I truly feel sorry for those victims, and yet I believe it will be the best memorial for all if thosewho have survived and especially if we Japanese examine anyimpropriety within ourselves and to redirect our way of lifeand thinking, and if we fail to do this then I’m afraid that theirsacrifices will end up in vain.Let us take an example, there are not many mountains inAustralia and therefore it does not rain very frequently. Thegovernment provides the people with a container, somethinglike a drum, for free to collect the rainwater. When I visitedAustralia, people used to do their washing by using thiscollected rainwater. They also drink this water after boiling. They don’t even waste a single drop of water. In Japan, wehave many mountains, and owing to these mountains we havea lot of rain, which then creates huge valleys and rivers. Weare gifted with a richness of nature. However there is noguarantee that the things which we take for granted each daywill be provided to us again tomorrow as well. When we thinkthis way, then we should feel grateful to have this water.
